Oh What a Beautiful Morning!!!
That's exactly what it is. According to the local weather it is 38 F, but it certainly feels warmer than that when you have to dig trenches! All that snow we had has to melt at some point, which turns into water, which makes a whole lot of mud. Of course, that means there's mud on the ground, mud on the deck, mud on the animals, mud on the dogs. There's just a whole lot of mud! So while that water is creating mud, we have to find a way to get rid of it before it turns the back yard into a big pit of slimy mud soup. Fortunately, the main part of the pasture, where it's the worst, is slanted downhill. The water flows from uphill down (of course!) and puddles up (more like lak es up) by our pond. Well, this is a main area of traffic, so there are a lot of footprints and hoof prints that make little tiny ponds and stop the water flow. That's where the trenches come in. We dig a big long trench going from the pasture gate all the way to the pond. We have branches that go to it as well. The good thing is, it's muddy enough that all we have to do is scrape a shovel, maybe chop some grass up, and it makes a good trench. Unfortunately, that takes work. But who doesn't like getting muddy?
After the long trench is built, all that water that was blocked up will eventually go to it and flow to these puddle/lakes we have. So then it just sits there? Nope! One more big trench to the pond.
Note: this isn't an unnatural thing, it usually ends up in the pond anyway. We're just helping it along so we're not knee deep in mud.
